Old Churches. Παλιές Εκκλησίες.

As you have probably seen in my previous posts, there are many old little Byzantine Churches in the narrow streets, in the older part of the city of Athens, below Acropolis. This one, according to the plaque, is dating back to the 11th century A.D.

 Υπάρχουν πάρα πολλές παλιές βυζαντινές εκκλησίες στα στενά δρομάκια της Πλάκας κάτω από την Ακρόπολη. Αυτή, σύμφωνα με την πλάκα, χρονολογείται από τον 11ο μΧ αιώνα.

Via Egnatia. The Egnatia Road. Η Εγνατία Οδός.

The Ancient Romans managed to conquer most of the known world of their time. They had an efficient army which they could move around their empire very quickly. They had to do so, in order to rule their empire effectively. They needed good roads to move their army. And they had to build them. Their engineers designed the roads which they were built by hundreds of thousands of slaves from they peoples they had conquered.
They needed a good road to move east across northern Greece, the Ancient Macedonia. They built Via Appia from Ancient Rome to the East of the Italian peninsula, to Brindisi, then from the other side of Adriatic  Sea, where is today's Albania, they built the Egnatia Road, Via Egnatia, all across northern Greece to Byzantium and the Black Sea. It was a good road, passing through the principal cities and towns of the time, and parts of that road can be still seen today.
In the recent years, a new road was built in Greece, starting at the port of Igoumenitsa , just across the island of Corfu, a little to the south of the old Via Egnatia, and following almost the same route to the east, ends at the Greek/Turkish border. It is also named (New) Egnatia Road, and it is the most modern motorway in Greece.

One of the main streets in Thessaloniki. Is Egnatia Street. It crosses the city from East to West and I walked again on it, last time I was there. It is filled with antiquities, ancient Greek, Roman and Byzantine. And more are being unearthed daily, as new excavations are made for the metro lines of Thessaloniki.

Οι αρχαίοι Ρωμαίοι για να διατηρήσουν τον έλεγχο της αυτοκρατορίας των, έπρεπε να έχουν δρόμους όπου ο στρατός και οι λεγεώνες των να μπορούν να κινηθούν γρήγορα. Παντού λοιπόν κατασκεύασαν μοντέρνους για την εποχή των δρόμους. Ένας από αυτούς ήταν και η Εγνατία οδός που ξεκινούσε από την ακτή απέναντι από το Μπρίντεζι, όπου η σημερινή Αλβανία και κατευθυνόταν ανατολικά, μέχρι το Βυζάντιο και την Μαύρη Θάλασσα, αφού περνούσε απ' όλες τις σημαντκώτερες πόλεις της αρχαίας Ελληνικής Μακεδονίας.
Εγνατία οδός ονομάζεται και ο καινούριος και σύγχρονος δρόμος, ο πιο μοντέρνος στην Ελλάδα. που κατασκευάστηκε πρόσφατα και ξεκινά λίγο νοτιώτερα από την παλιά Εγνατία και ακολουθώντας περίπου την ίδια διαδρομή φτάνει μέχρι τα Ελληνοτουρκιά σύνορα.
Εγνατία οδός ονομάζεται και ο κεντρικώτερος δρόμος της Θεσσαλονίκης που διασχίζει την πόλη από την μια άκρη μέχρι την άλλη και είναι γεμάτος από μνημεία αρχαία, ρωμαικά και βυζαντινά.
Είχα την χαρά να περπατήσω ένα κομάτι της ξανά πριν από λίγες μέρες.

I am always fascinated by old churches, built centuries ago, according to our tradition,  by local masons and craftsmen, most of them self-taught, as this one. It is what is remaining from an old monastery, in a small village on Mt Pindos in northern Greece. Unfortunately, I found the church locked so I could not take a few photographs from the inside.

Πάντα μ' αρέσουν οι παλιές εκκλησίες που είναι φτιαγμένες από ντόπιους, αυτοδίδακτους μαστόρους, σύμφωνα με την παράδοσή μας, αιώνες πριν. Η σημερινή, είναι ότι απομένει από ένα παλιό μοναστήρι, ψηλά στην Πίνδο, στο χωριό Σπήλαιο των Γρεβενών. Δυστυχώς, την βρήκα κλειδωμένη και δεν μπόρεσα να τραβήξω φωτογραφίες από το εσωτερικό της.

An old Byzantine Church, the only lasting building from an old Monastery, dating back to 1300 A.D.
You can find it in the small village of Spileon, near Grevena in northern Greece, high up on the mountain of Pindos. It has been renovated recently. There are some really amazing frescoes inside, but I was not allowed to take any photographs of them. It is a must see.

Μια παλιά Βυζαντινλη εκκλησία στο χωριό Σπήλαιο των Γρεβενών, ψηλά στην Πίνδο. Μέρος ενός παλιού Μοναστηριού και το μόνο κτίσμα που παραμένει σε καλή κατάσταση. Χτίστηκε γύρω στα 1300 μ.Χ. και ανακαινίσθηκε πρόσφατα. Υπέροχες τοιχογραφίες στολίζουν το εσωτερικό του ναού που είναι αφιερωμένος στην Κοίμηση της Θεοτόκου, αλλά δεν μου επέτρεψαν να τραβήξω φωτογραφίες. Αξίζει πάντως τον κόπο μιας επίσκεψης.

Near the village square, at the end of a narrow archway, is a beautiful small church, a real monument of the Byzantine era. The church of the Apostles. Beautifully preserved from the 13th century a.D. and decorated with frescoes done by famous painters of the time. Enjoy.

Κοντά στην πλατεία του χωριού, στο τέλος μιας μικρής στοάς, βρίσκεται ο Βυζαντινός ναός των Αγίων Αποστόλων. Άριστα διατηρημένος από τον 13ο αιώνα μ.Χ. και τοιχογραφημένος από τον Δεμέστιχο Κυνηγό τον Κρήτα. Χαρείτε τον.

Samarina. A village in Grevena. Σαμαρίνα Γρεβενών.

Samarina must be the village in the highest altitude in Greece. On top of Mt Pindos. All inhabitants stay there in summer. In winter they move to lower levels. In the recent years, a ski resort was constructed close to it, so there is activity in winter also, so the roads are cleared and some hotels are operating all year round. There is a big old church in the village, with a conifer growing up on the roof of the holly of hollies.Unfortunately, I found the church closed at the time I was there and I could not take a few photographs of the inside.
Η Σαμαρίνα πρεπει νάναι το ψηλότερο χωριό της Ελλάδας, πάνω στις κορυφές της Πίνδου. Παλιότερα το χωριό είχε κατοίκους μόνο κατά τους θερινούς μήνες. Τον χειμώνα, όλοι μετακόμιζαν χαμηλώτερα στον Θεσσαλικό κάμπο. Τώρα, με το χιονοδρομικό κέντρο της Βασσιλίτσας που είναι κοντά, οι δρόμοι καθαρίζονται από το χιόνι τον χειμώνα και παραμένουν και ξενοδοχεία ανοιχτά όλο το χρόνο. Ενδιαφέρον έχει μια μεγάλη και παλιά εκκλησία στο χωριό, που ένα έλατο μεγαλώνει στην  οροφή του ιερού. Δυστυχώς την βρήκα κλειστή και δεν μπόρεσα να τραβήξω φωτογραφίες από το εσωτερικό.

This one is really old. A byzantine monument with beautiful frescoes. Unfortunately I found it locked and could not take photographs from the inside.

Αυτό το εκκλησάκι είναι Βυζαντινό μνημείο, με ωραίες τοιχιογραφίες. Δυστυχώς το βρήκα κλειδωμένο και δεν μπόρεσα να πάρω φωτογραφίες μέσα.
