The port of Souda in Crete looks different at different times of the day.

Το λιμάνι της Σούδας φαίνεται διαφορετικό σε διαφορετικές ώρες της ημέρας.

This is the Cemetery of the allied soldiers who fell at the Battle of Crete, during World War II. Each tombstone has a different name. Some do not have names. Young soldiers from England, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa,  Rhodesia, India, Cyprus were killed here while fighting fascism, fighting racism, fighting the evil. They were fighting for freedom, humanity and self-respect. Now, seventy years later, the forces of the evil are being re-united against the people and humanity.

Αυτό είναι το νεκροταφείο των συμμαχικών δυνάμεων, των στρατιωτών που έπεσαν στην Μάχη της Κρήτης στον δεύτερο παγκόσμιο πόλεμο. Κάθε ταφόπλακα γράφει και ένα διαφορετικό όνομα. Μερικές δεν αναφέρουν καθόλου όνομα. Νεαροί στρατιώτες από την Αγγλία, την Αυστραλία, την Νέα Ζηλανδία, την Νότια Αφρική την Ροδεσία, την Ινδία, την Κύπρο σκοτώθηκαν εδώ μαχόμενοι εναντίον του φασισμού, του ρατσισμού, του κακού. Μάχονταν για την ελευθερία, την ανθρωπιά και την αξιοπρέπεια. Τώρα, εβδομήντα χρόνια μετά, οι δυνάμεις του κακού ανασυντάσσονται και και ξαναενώνονται εναντίων των ανθρώπων και της ανθρωπότητας.

It is still early in the morning. Having my first coffee looking at the calm waters of Suda Bay. It is one of the largest natural ports in the Mediterranean. For the moment it is the port supporting the town of Chania and all western Crete. The sun has not come up yet. Only the distant tops of the White Mountains are bathed in the morning light. Slowly the sun starts warming up the lower levels. The green with the white patterns,  in the center of the last two photographs, is the Cemetery of the allied troops who fell during the Battle of Crete in WW II. The white blocks are the tombstones of those identified.
Πρωινό στο λιμάνι της Σούδας. Απολαμβάνω την θέα με τον πρώτο μου καφέ. Ο ήλιος δεν μας έχει πιάσει ακόμη, μόνο λούζει με το πρωινό φως του τις κορυφές των Λευκών Ορέων. Σιγά σιγά αρχίζει να ζεσταίνει και χαμηλώτερα. Στο κέντρο, στις δυό τελευταίες φωτογραφίες, φαίνεται το νεκροταφείο των συμμάχων πού έπεσαν στην Μάχη της Κρήτης στον Β΄ Παγκόσμιο Πόλεμο.
