In Greece, we say that the swallows are the messengers of the arriving spring. They are migrating birds. In winter they are moving to northern Africa and they come back to us with the first signs of spring. I saw a couple of them as I was walking around the place I live a couple of days ago.
Τα χελιδόνια τα θεωρούμε προάγγελους της άνοιξης. Τον χειμώνα μας αφίνουν για να τον περάσουν στην βόρεια Αφρική και μας επισκέφτονται ξανά με τα πρώτα σημάδια της άνοιξης. Είδα ένα ζευγάρι προχθές όπως περπατούσα τους δρόμους στη γειτονιά μου.
The orange trees are in full bloom. Some, still carry some fruit on them.
Οι πορτοκαλιές και οι νερατζιές είναι σε πλήρη άνθηση. Μερικά δέντδρα έχουν ακόμη καρπούς.
Some kind of imported bug is destroying the palm trees here. When the tree is infected there is no way to survive and it will be dead in a couple of months. You can see them being cut and uprooted everywhere. Someone in my neighborhood found a better use for the dead trunk. He left it in his front lawn and made a beautiful natural flower pot out of it.
Ένα εισαγόμενο σκαθάρι καταστρέφει τους φοίνικες. Όταν προσβληθεί το δένδρο δεν υπάρχει θεραπεία. Παντού βλέπεις να κόβουν και να ξεριζώνουν τις φοινικιές. Κάποιος όμως στην γειτονιάμου βρήκε μια καλύτερη λύση. Αφησε ένα κομάτι του κορμού μπροστά στο σπίτι του και το έκανε μια όμορφη γλάστρα.
