Its a hard life.... Η ζωή είναι δύσκολη....

Mrs collared dove was in a hurry to build her nest and lay her eggs this season. The good weather a few days ago deceived her. And now she is looking at her nest sad. Not much of a nest either. Just a few small sticks thrown on the branch outside my window. I think she had already laid an egg when the nest was raided by the magpies patrolling the back garden.

Η δεκοχτούρα βιάστηκε να φτιάξη την φωλιά και ν' αρχίσει να κάνει οικογένεια φέτος. Την ξεγέλασε ο καλός καιρός των περασμένων ημερών. Και τώρα κοιτά την φωλιά της περίλυπη, όπως την χτυπά η κακοκαιρία. Όχι πως ήταν και καμμιά φωλιά της προκοπής. Κάτι κλαδάκια πεταμένα όπως όπως πάνω στο μεγαλύτερο κλαδί ακριβώς έξω από το παράθυρό μου. Νομίζω πως πρέπει νάχε κάνει και κανένα αυγό, όταν έγινε επιδρομή στην φωλιά από τις καρακάξες που περιπολούν στην περιοχή.

Balancing on the edge opf the precipice. Ισορροπώντας στην άκρη το γκρεμού.

This pair of collared doves, is trying to balance and fit on the narrow space at the top of the power pole.
They can manage. On the other hand, if the fall, they have means to survive. They can fly away before they hit the ground. For us it is different. We are trying to balance at the edge of the precipice. It is not easy. And we know that if we do not make it, the fall will be fatal. There is no way to survive.

Το ζευγάρι οι δεκοχτούρες προσπαθούν να ισορροπήσουν πάνω στην άκρη της κολώνας το ηλεκτρικού. προσπαθούν να χωρέσουν, έχουν κάποιες δυσκολίες, αλλά στο τέλος τα καταφέρνουν.
Και να μην τα κατάφερναν, έχουν εναλλακτικές λύσεις. Θα πετάξουν μακρυά, και θ' αποφύγουν την πτώση.
Για μας, τα πράγματα είναι διαφορετικά. Προσπαθούμε να πιαστούμε, να ισορροπήσουμε στην άκρη του γκρεμού. Αν δεν τα καταφέρουμε, το πέσιμο θα είναι μοιραίο. Δεν υπάρχει υπάρχει ελπίδα  σωτηρίας και επιβίωσης.

Singles and pairs in Crete. Μοναχικοί και ζευγάρια στην Κρήτη.

I had never seen the collared doves in Crete before. Now it looks like there are a few pairs living around the village and I had the chance to take a few photographs of them.

Δεν είχα ξανασυνατήσει δεκοχτούρες στην Κρήτη πιο πριν. Τώρα φαίνεται πως υπάρχουν μερικά ζευγάρια που ζούν γύρω από το χωριό μου και είχα την ευκαιρία να τους τραβήξω μερικές φωτογραφίες.

Home sweet home. Σπίτι μου σπιτάκι μου.

I was glad to see again these days the pair of collared doves from last year coming back to their old nest, preparing it and being ready to lay new eggs. I will be keeping a close eye on them and make updates, as their nest is just under my balcony.. and it is easy to watch them.

Με μεγάλη μου χαρά είδα το περυσινο ζευγάρι τις δεκοχτούρες να ξανάρχονται και φέτος στην παλιά τους φωλιά, να την επισκευάζουν και να την ετοιμάζουν για την καινούρια οικογένεια. Θα τις παρακολουθώ από κοντά και θα σας ενημερώνω μια και η φωλιά βρίσκεται ακριβώς κάτω από το μπαλκόνι μου.

Θα λείψω μια-δυο βδομάδες  και θα μου λείψετε όλοι. Θα αφήσω μερικές αναρτήσεις να εμφανίζονται αυτόματα όσο θα λείπω, έτσι θά έχετε μερικές φωτογραφίες να βλέπετε.
Πρώτα οι δυό δεκοχτούρες που μεγάλωσαν και σύντομα θα εγκαταλείψουν την φωλιά. Δεν νομίζω να τις προλάβω μέχρι να γυρίσω.

Growing Older. Μεγαλώνοντας.

The two chicks of the collared dove nesting in front of my balcony, are growing older and bigger and new feathers are appearing every day.
Τα δυό μικρά της δεκοχτούρας που φωλιάζει μπροστά στο μπαλκόνι μου, μεγαλώνουν μέρα με τη μέρα. Καινούρια φτερά εμφανίζονται.

Collared Dove. Η δεκοχτούρα.

A break on  my series on Crete, to give you an update on the collared dove, nesting close to my balcony. I was seeing her on the nest for some time, two months ago. Then, suddenly, she left the nest without any eggs in it, and a couple of weeks ago, I started seeing her again in the nest. Yesterday afternoon I had my first chance to have a look at the nest while she was away for a very short time. Look at what I saw.
Ένα διάλειμα στην σειρά των αναρτήσεών μου απο την Κρήτη, να σας δώσω νεώτερα από την δεκοχτούρα που φωλιάζει μπροστά στο μπαλκόνι μου. Την είχα χάσει για αρκετό καιρό και πρίν από συό βδομάδες άρχισα να την βλέπω ξανά στην φωλιά. Χθές το απόγευμα είχα την ευκαιρία να ρίξω μια ματιά στην φωλιά, την ώρα που την είχε αφίσει για λίγο.. Δέστε τι είδα.

Mother does not stay away from the nest for long, as the hawks are still in the neighborhood, and they have six hungry mouths to feed.

Η μητέρα δεν λείπει απο την φωλιά για πολύ, επειδή τα γεράκια κυκλοφορούν συνέχεια στην γειτονιά και έχουνε έξι πεινασμένα στόματα να θρέψουν.
