Good bye Chalkis. Αποχαιρετώντας την Χαλκίδα

Time passes quickly, especially when we do not want it to. It was late afternoon an it was time to take the way back to Athens. One last glance at the old bridge and a few more to the new one from inside the car, as we were driving over it.

Ο χρόνος περνά γρήγορα ειδικά όταν δεν το θέλουμε. Ήταμ πια αργά το απόγευμα όταν ήρθε η ώρα ν' αποχαιρετήσουμε την Χαλκίδα και να πάρουμε τον δρόμο της επιστροφής στην Αθήνα. Μια τελευταία ματιά στην παλιά γέφυρα και μερικές ακόμη στην καινούρια μέσα απο το αυτοκίνητο, όπως περνούσαμε από πάνω.

Another monument in Chalkis. An old mosque (Emirzade Camii) built by the Turks who had occupied Greece in the 15th century. It looks like there was a tower next to it fallen now. And, as you can see there are vandals with their graffiti everywhere.

Ένα άλλο μνημείο της περασμένης εποχής στην Χαλκίδα. Το τζαμί Εμίρ Τζαντέ. Χτίστηκε από τους Τούρκους τον 15ο αιώνα. Και όπως βλέπετε, βάνδαλοι με τα γκράφιτι υπάρχουν παντού.

There were not just humans fishing in the fish-rich waters and the currents of the straits. There were many winged fishers also. Like seagulls and cormorants. Not easy to catch them though. Always playing hide and seek with me.

Δεν υπήρχαν μόνον άνθρωποι που ψάρευαν στα πλούσια σε ψάρια νερά του Ευβοικού. Υπήρχαν και φτερωτοί ψαράδες όπως γλάροι και κορμοράνοι. Δεν ήταν εύκολο όμως να τους προλάβω. Συνέχεια έπαιζαν το κρυφτούλι μαζί μου.

I stayed there only a few hours. But the weather was nice and warm and a walk along the seafront was worth everything.

Έμεινα μόνο λίγες ώρες εκεί αλλά ο καιρός ήταν όμορφος και άξιζε η βόλτα στην παραλία.

On the straits of Evripos.(II) Στον Πορθμό του Ευρίπου.(II)

At the narrowest point of the straits of Evripos, the old bridge was built and the city of Chalkis is expanding on either side of it. This metal bridge is opening when needed, to allow ships and other tall vessels to pass from one side to the other. One, can see the strong currents flowing through the straits, due to the tide and which are changing direction every six hours.

Στο στενότερο σημείο του πορθμού του Ευρίπου υπάρχει η παλιά μεταλική γέφυρα και η πόλη της Χαλκίδας εκτείνεται και από τη μια καί την άλλη πλευρά. Όταν βρίσκεσαι κοντά στα στενά, μπορείς να παρατηρήσεις τα ισχυρά ρεύματα που αλλάζουν κατεύθυνση κάθε έξη ώρες λόγω της παλίρροιας.

A narrow strip of sea, more like a river separates the island of Euboia from mainland Greece. The narrowest point, is called the straits of Evripos, meaning the straits where waters flow easily. And they do, as you will have the chance to see in my future posts. Just like a river. A new bridge was built there some 30 years back. You can see the bridge from the side of the mainland in my first four photographs. On the last two photographs you can see the smaller and older bridge, at the narrowest point. That bridge is opening when required, to allow ships to cross the straits. and is still in operation. On either side of the bridge is the city of Chalkis, a beautiful city as you will have the chance to see later.

Είχα την ευκαιρία να τραβήξω μερικές φωτογραφίες και από την όμορφη Χαλκίδα όταν ένας φίλος με πήρε για παρέα για τον δρόμο νια που είχε μια δουλειά να κάνει εκεί.
