On the straits of Evripos.(II) Στον Πορθμό του Ευρίπου.(II)

At the narrowest point of the straits of Evripos, the old bridge was built and the city of Chalkis is expanding on either side of it. This metal bridge is opening when needed, to allow ships and other tall vessels to pass from one side to the other. One, can see the strong currents flowing through the straits, due to the tide and which are changing direction every six hours.

Στο στενότερο σημείο του πορθμού του Ευρίπου υπάρχει η παλιά μεταλική γέφυρα και η πόλη της Χαλκίδας εκτείνεται και από τη μια καί την άλλη πλευρά. Όταν βρίσκεσαι κοντά στα στενά, μπορείς να παρατηρήσεις τα ισχυρά ρεύματα που αλλάζουν κατεύθυνση κάθε έξη ώρες λόγω της παλίρροιας.

A narrow strip of sea, more like a river separates the island of Euboia from mainland Greece. The narrowest point, is called the straits of Evripos, meaning the straits where waters flow easily. And they do, as you will have the chance to see in my future posts. Just like a river. A new bridge was built there some 30 years back. You can see the bridge from the side of the mainland in my first four photographs. On the last two photographs you can see the smaller and older bridge, at the narrowest point. That bridge is opening when required, to allow ships to cross the straits. and is still in operation. On either side of the bridge is the city of Chalkis, a beautiful city as you will have the chance to see later.

Η γέφυρα στον πορθμό του Ευρίπου. Και η καινούρια που κατασκευάστηκε πριν καμμιά τριανταρία χρόνια και η παλιά. Είχα την ευκαιρία να τραβήξω μερικές φωτογραφίες και από την όμορφη Χαλκίδα όταν ένας φίλος με πήρε για παρέα για τον δρόμο νια που είχε μια δουλειά να κάνει εκεί.
