There were not just humans fishing in the fish-rich waters and the currents of the straits. There were many winged fishers also. Like seagulls and cormorants. Not easy to catch them though. Always playing hide and seek with me.

Δεν υπήρχαν μόνον άνθρωποι που ψάρευαν στα πλούσια σε ψάρια νερά του Ευβοικού. Υπήρχαν και φτερωτοί ψαράδες όπως γλάροι και κορμοράνοι. Δεν ήταν εύκολο όμως να τους προλάβω. Συνέχεια έπαιζαν το κρυφτούλι μαζί μου.

It was over a decade ago. Our prime minister at that time, liked to quote proverbs from ancient Chinese wise men. One of them was something like this : "When you see someone hungry, do not give him any fish. Teach him to fish for himself". The good prime minister forgot to tell us though if he was fishing the fish he was consuming with his company  at the taverns of the Greek islands he was visiting. Now, we can see some Greeks have started fishing by themselves to survive. They are not aware though that there are thieves going after their catch. What they will be bringing home, is what will be left after the thieves make their selection first. And it will not be much. And they will be hungry. If the catch is big or small, is irrelevant.

Όλοι θυμόμαστε τον καλό μας πρωθυπουργό τον κ. Σημίτη που ήθελε να μας διδάξει με σοφές κινέζικες παροιμίες. Σαν κι αυτή : "Όταν πεινά κάποιος, μην του δώσεις ψάρια. Μάθε τον να ψαρεύει". Είχε ξεχάσει όμως ο καλός πρωθυπουργός να μας πεί αν τα ψάρια που κατανάλωνε με την παρέα του στις ταβέρνες της Σίφνου τα ψάρευε ο ίδιος. Τώρα βλέπουμε τους Έλληνες ν' ακολουθούν τις συμβουλές του και να ψαρεύουν οι ίδιοι για να επιβιώσουν. Δεν βλέπουν όμως τους κλέφτες που παραμονεύουν να τους αρπάξουν την ψαριά. Το τι θα περισσέψει για να φάνε στο σπίτι, εξαρτάται από το τι θ' αφήσουν οι κλέφτες που έχουν και τον πρώτο λόγο στην επιλογή. Και δεν θα μείνουν και πολλά πράγματα. Δεν θα ξεπεινάσουν. Άσχετα με τον αν η ψαριά ήταν μικρή ή μεγάλη.

PS. These photographs were taken last Saturday afternoon at the small fishing village of Aghia Kiriaki, Trkeri, Greece, while negotiations between the Greek government, the IMF and the European Union were going on once more to decide what other taxation to impose on the Greeks and how much more to cut again from pensions and salaries of the people to make even for the money stolen by others from them.
Υ.Γ.Οι φωτογραφίες τραβήχτηκαν το απόγευμα του περασμένου Σαββάτου στο ψαροχώρι Αγία Κυριακή στο Τρίκερι της Μαγνησίας, ενώ ακόμη μια φορά συνεχίζονταν οι διαβουλεύσεις ανάμεσα στην κυβέρνηση, το ΔΝΤ την Τρόικα και την Ευρωπαική Ένωση για να βρούνε τι άλλο να φορολογήσουν και τι να περικόψουν από τους Έλληνες για να μαζευτούν τα λεφτά που έφαγαν άλλοι.

Leo. Ο Λέων

This evening while talking a walk along Glyfada's beach, I met a fisherman mending his nets, in company of his friend Leo. Later Leo posed for me alone.
Απόψε, ενώ έκανα μια βόλτα στην παραλία της Γλυφάδας, συνάντησα ένα ψαρά που μπαλωνε τα δίχτυα του, συντροφιά με τον φίλο του τον "Λέων". Αργότερα, ο Λέων ποζάρισε μοναχός για μένα.
