Capers. Η κάπαρη.

You can see the bush, always green on the dry rocky cliffs, overhanging the coasts of our islands. I was intrigued by its beautiful flowers, which are in full bloom this period. The buds, before they open and the small fruit, are being collected and pickled and used in Mediterranean cooking and salads. It is worth to try them sometime. I have discovered this bush not very far away from where I live, on a rock, at the hills of Imittos, near Athens. And of course I had to take a few shots at it.

 Την κάπαρη την ξέρουμε όλοι στο βαζάκι του μπακάλικου. Το φυτό όμως δεν είναι γνωστό σε πολλούς επειδή φυτρώνει σε μέρη απόκρημνα και δυσπρόσιτα, στα βράχια και στους γκρεμνούς των νησιών μας. Μπορεί κανείς να τύχει να το δει από μακρυά, να πρασινίζει στην κατάξερη επιφάνεια κάποιου βράχου. Εκείνο που μ' αρέσει με το φυτό, είναι τα λουλούδια του, που είναι από τα πιο όμορφα της φύσης. Και ανθίζουν αυτήν την εποχή. Το φυτό της φωτογραφίας το ανακάλυψα πάνω σε κάποιο βράχο του Υμηττού, πάνω από την Βούλα.

It is usually growing on the dry, salty rocks near the coasts of the Aegean islands. I found this plant, with its beautiful flowers on a rock on the hills of Imittos, south of Athens. I might come back here sometime later to collect the little fruit, which pickled, are used to give some taste to salads and dishes.

Συνήθως την βρισκουμε στους βράχουσ και τους γκρεμούς των νησιών μας, κοντά στην θάλασσα. Εφώ το βρήκα το φυτό αυτό με τα ομορφα μπουμπούκια στον Υμηττό, πάνω από την Βούλα. Μπορεί να ξαναπεράσω αργότερα, όταν θάχουν μεστώσει οι καρποί να τους μαζέψω, αν δεν μ' έχει προλάβει κάποιος άλλος. Πάντα μ' αρέσει στις σαλάτες ή σε μερικά φαγητά.

The bee was trying to force her way in the inner parts of the flower which was not open yet, to be the first to collect the sweet juices.

Η μέλισσα προσπαθολύσε να χωθεί στα ενδότερα του λουλουδιού που δεν είχε ακόμη ανοίξει τελείως για νάναι η πρώτη που θα συλλέξει τους γλυκούς χυμούς.

As I was going through older photographs I had taken, I fell upon these I shot last summer and decided to publish some of them again. They are of a caper plant. It grows around the Mediterranean, the Greek islands in places not easy to reach. And its flower is unique. It is so beautiful. As is its small fruit, which is edible and used in salads or cooked, pickled. It has a unique taste. I caught this specific plant, while it was in full bloom, displaying the beauty of its flowers, to attract the insects. And it had attracted quite a number of critters on it, hosting them on its leaves and sponsoring their activities.

Ψάχνοντας παλιότερες φωτογραφίες που έχω τραβήξει, έπεσα πάνω σ' αυτές που τράβηξα το περασμένο καλοκαίρι, απο ένα φυτό κάπαρης που βρήκα πάνω στον Υμηττό. Όλοι γνωρίζουμε την κάπαρη και την απολαμβάνουμε στις σαλάτες ή στο μαγείρεμα, αλλά λίγοι έχου δει τα όμορφα λουλούδια της. Εδώ πέτυχα το φυτό αυτό, όπως είχε ανοίξει τα λουλούδια του για να προσελκύσει τα έντομα. Και πράγματι φιλοξενούσε αρκετά από αυτά πάνω στα φύλλα του και προστάτευε τις δραστηριότητές τους.

We all have used it in cooking or in salads. The plant is a bush, able to survive in the harsh environment of the Greek islands. Its flower is beautiful and so unusual. 

I found this plant on the hills near where I live. And it had some visitors and there was some activity on its leaves.

Σ' όλους μας αρέσει να την χρησιμοποιούμε στην μαγειρική και σε σαλάτες. Είναι ένας μικρός θάμνος που αναπτύσεται στους γκρεμούς των ελληνικών νησιών. Το λουλούδι του είναι πανέμορφο στην εποχή του. Αυτό το βρήκα στις πλαγιές του Υμηττού, πάνω από την Βούλα. Και είχε και αρκετούς επισκέπτες. Και κάποια δραστηριότητα.

Nous avons tous l'ont utilisée dans la cuisine ou dans les salades. La plante est un arbuste, capable de survivre dans l'environnement hostile des îles grecques. Sa fleur est belle et si rare.

J'ai trouvé cette plante sur les collines près de là où j'habite. Et il avait quelques visiteurs et il y avait une certaine activité sur ses feuilles.
