Grapes and figs. Σταφύλια και σύκα.

Not far from the village, on the mountains of western Crete, there is an area with small properties, which is good for growing almost everything. There are the olive groves and vineyards. Small pieces of land, taken care with hard work, love and attention and the villagers get their olive oil and wine from them. An early morning walk around there, is always relaxing and rewarding. As it was for me the few days I was in Crete again. This must be a good year  for production. The grapes look healthy promising very good wine, the figs from the trees around the vineyards were tasty and sweet. When you taste the gifts of mother earth, you cannot fail not to think of the ancestors who, with hard work, formed those pieces of land and planted them. And never fail to say a prayer for their souls and wish them to rest in peace.

Όχι πολύ μακριά από το χωριό, στις ρίζες των Λευκών Ορέων (Μαδάρες) της Κρήτης, είναι η περιοχή που οι χωριανοί έχουν τ' αμπέλια και τις ελιές τους. Στην περιοχή μπορούν να καλλιεργηθούν τα πάντα αλλά, προτιμούν να έχουν τα μικρά κομάτια γής με τα αμπέλια και τις ελιές επειδή είναι κάπως πιο επίπεδο το μέρος. Τα φροντίζουν με σκληρή δουλειά και πολλή αγάπη, για νάχουν το λάδι και το κρασί της χρονιάς. Μια πρωινή βόλτα στην περιοχή σε ανταμοίβει και σε ξεκουράζει. Όπως ένιωσα κι εγώ τις λίγες μέρες που βρέθηκα ξανά στην Κρήτη. Φαίνεται πως η χρονιά η φετεινή θάναι καλή για την παραγωγή. Τ' αμπέλια φαίνονται να υπόσχονται καλό και αρκετό κρασί αργότερα και τα σύκα, στις συκιές που βρίσκονται στις άκρες, χρυσαφένια και ολόγλυκα. Όταν δοκιμάζεις τα δώρα της μάννας γης, δεν μπορείς παρά να σκεφτείς εκείνους που με πολλή σκληρή δουλειά, διαμόρφωσαν τους χώρους, και με πολλή αγάπη φρόντισαν να τα δημιουργήσουν όλα αυτά. Και δεν μπορείς παρά να ευχηθείς ν' αναπαύονται οι ψυχές τους.

Zizifus, Olive trees and Vineyards. Τζιτζιφιές, Ελαιόδενδρα και αμπέλια.

The village took its name from Zizifus, a rather rare tree which I have not seen in other places, not that it does not exist elsewhere. It grows in the little valley a little lower the spring, and it looks like It is growing by itself. New plants start growing under or near the older ones. It produces small fruit which change from green to chestnut color when they are ripe by the end of September. They taste something like apple and have the size of a cherry. You can dry them and they become like raisins and you can keep them all winter. The time I took these photographs the trees were in full bloom.

Το χωριό, πήρε τ' όνομά του, από την Τζιτζιφιά, ένα δένδρο όχι τόσο πολύ κοινό. Εγώ τουλάχιστον δεν τόχω δεί αλλού. Η ρεμματιά, λίγο πιο χαμηλά από την βρύση, έχει πάρα πολλά. Οι καρποί του, μικροί σαν κεράσια, ωριμάζουν προς τα τέλη του Σεπτέμβρη, και παίρνουν ένα καστανό χρώμα. Μπορεί κανείς να ξεράνη τα ώριμα σαν σταφίδες και να τα κρατήσει όλον το χειμώνα. Έχουν γεύση περίπου σαν το μήλο. Αυτή την εποχή τα δένδρα ήταν γεμάτα ανθό.

Olive trees, younger and older around the village. These are of the oil producing variety. This year looks promising to be a good one, as the trees are heavy with olives.

Ελαιόδενδρα, μικρά και μεγάλα γύρω από το χωριό. Είναι πιο πολύ για την παραγωγή λαδιού. Και η φετεινή χρονιά υπόσχεται πολλά, καθώς τα δένδρα είναι φορτωμένα.

Vineyards look promising also.
Και τ' αμπέλια φαίνονται καλά φέτος.
