On the road again. Chios. Going North. Πάλι στο δρόμο. Προς βορρά. Στην Χίο.

I was driving to visit the north western part of the island of Chios, through dry and rocky land, when I noticed several green patches, with new plants on either side of the road. I stopped to take a few photographs, and saw someone watering the new plants with a tank truck. What is happening is this. Pieces of land are "adopted" and planted and taken care off till the trees are grown up, in the memory of a dear one who has departed. I think it was something nice to do and wish more people were doing this not just here but elsewhere also. After a few years, the picture of these hills will change.

Ενώ οδηγούσα για να δώ το βορειοδυτικό κομάτι της Χίου, παρατήρησα μερικές πράσινες οάσεις στο ξερό και βραχώδες τοπίο. Αυτό που συμβαίνει είναι το εξής : Κομμάτια το ξερότοπου "υιοθετούνται" , φυτεύονται με δασικά δέντρα και φροντίζονται μέχρι τα δεντράκια να μεγαλώσουν. Όλα αυτά στην μνήμη κάποιου προσφιλούς προσώπου που αποχαιρέτησε τον κόσμο. Νομίζω πως είναι μια αξιέπαινη προσπάθεια ν΄αποκατασταθούν κάπως τα γυμνά βουνά μας και η φύση που την έχομε καταστρέψει.

A little further down the road, a herd of goats was resting. In Chios, a very tasty kind of cheese is being made from their milk. It is called "Mastello".

Λίγο παραπέρα ένα κοπάδι γίδες ξεκουράζεται. Στην Χίο φτιάχνουν ένα καταπληκτικό άσπρο τυρί το "Μαστέλλο" με το γάλα τους.

After a while, we reached the northern part of the island. The view was fantastic again with some beautiful villages seen in the distance and a surprise waiting for us as you will see in my future posts.

Κάποια στιγμή φτάσαμε στο βόρειο μέρος του νησιού , είχε μια καταπληκτική θέα, με περισσότερα όμορφα χωριά να φαίνονται και μιά έκπληξη που μας περίμενε όπως θα δείτε στις επόμενες αναρτήσεις.
