The secrets of the rock.(II) Τα μυστικά του βράχου.(II) Les secrets de la roche.(II)

The boat carrying us was moving along the south-western side of the rock, when another of its secrets started being revealed. An opening on the surface of the rock which started growing larger as we were getting closer, revealing this magnificent cave.
The wind was from the north and the waters here were calm. As we were getting closer and finally entered the cave, we were surrounded by its beauty. It was very large, capable of giving shelter to a ship much larger than the one carrying us, which had two decks and could carry seventy people. And it looks like, in its time this cave has given shelter to the pirates who were raiding the Aegean Islands in older times. It is facing south-west, and can not be seen from Kythera. And one has to be really close to it to find its opening. It gives shelter to all vessels when the winds are from the north, but if you are caught in it when the weather changes and they start blowing from the south or the west, then you ll be trapped in it and there is no escape. And it seems that it has happened before. I started taking photographs of the surroundings while I was on the upper deck, but then I had to leave my camera on board, and dive in the waters and swim, to visit the other parts of the cave. It goes some 200 meters (600 feet) deep, and we were guided to about halfway in. The natural light which was illuminating the cave, could not go any further to its other parts. And the best time to visit it, is the time we were there, late in the afternoon, when the sun is low on the horizon and its light can go in the cave like a spotlight.
As I was swimming following the others i felt like i wanted to cry because my camera was not water proof to take it with me and be able to show you the beauty we saw.

I have never seen this place and yet it seems to be so familiar. Such is the scenery of all the Mediterranean islands.

This takes my breath. I can only imagine how you felt when you realized what you could not capture with your camera. Perhaps one day you can return and bring a different one to show us what you saw. For now, we are happy to see this amazing color.
