Walking the streets of Athens(XV).Discovering the past.

Everywhere you dig in Athens center, you will discover the past. These ruins of an ancient building, probably Roman baths, were discovered relatively recently near Athens center, during the excavations for the metro lines.

I'm always so fascinated by the ruins and particularly the ones in Greece. I studied so much Greek history when I was in college and then later being able to travel there was fantastic! Your captures of these ruins are fantastic, Costas, as always! Hope your weekend is going well!

@Greece's Flora
The ruins are near Syntagma square, on Amalia's Avenue, on the pavement just after the entrance to the gardens around Zappion.

I like places like this one, where we may learn more about mankind.

I was there in 1989 - so long ago and I see all of these amazing finds and long to return. What an amazing place ... continual discovery!

Please tell me they preserved this and did not destroy it for your Metro. This reminds me of the Fellini film "Roma", where ancient murals and ruins are discovered beneath Rome during a construction project. As soon as the walls around the ruins are breached the air sweeps in and the city air destroys the paintings as the horrified archaeologists watch helplessly. The only thing comparable to this in the Americas are the Mayan and Aztec ruins and the lost Indian cities in New Mexico.
