Partridges.

They were a common sight all around mainland Greece and the islands a few years back. Now they become almost extinct. The partridges are one of the favorites of hunters where they are allowed to be shot.  These I saw and shot near the temple of Poseidon, at Sounion, Greece, where they are protected. When you visit the temple,  you may see them walking around you, or if you are lucky, you may see a mother hen with ten to fifteen young chicks following her.

So sad to hear that they are nearing extinction. Looking at your beautiful images, I noticed them camouflaging in the background.

Hello Costas, these are beautiful birds and the header photo showed their wonderful colors. Sorry to hear about the hunt, but glad the ones you showed were protected. One day we hope to see some of magnificent temples in your posts.

Look like what we call quail. Birds like this do stay within a particular area. You were stealthy to catch these.

It is sad for the birds and I am glad there is a place where they are protected. Your photos are terrific as always and, of course, I love seeing the temple ruins! Thanks as always for sharing the beauty of your wonderful country! Hope your week is off to a good start, Costas! Enjoy!

What a sweet looking little bird, it is sad that their numbers are dwindling.
