Monemvasia, Peloponese, Greece.

Above you can see a panoramic view of the rock and natural fortress of Monemvasia in south-eastern  Peloponnese. The town and the castle started being built sometime in the 6th century A.D. It became soon a prospering town and important port of the Byzantine Empire, due to its natural stronghold abilities. It was later occupied by the crusaders, who used the port for exporting the excellent local wine "Malvasia", then the last Byzantine emperors reclaimed it, till it fell at the hands of the Turks around the 15th century and was freed and became part of the new Greek state in early 18th century. All different inhabitants and conquerors who passed from the rock, have left their marks on it, as you will see when you walk the narrow streets of the lower and upper town, inside the castle. You can also see a few more details of the place, in Wikimapia and read more of its rich history in Wikipedia. I am starting my posts with a few photographs taken from outside the castle, in good and bad weather, calm and rough seas.
