Kythera. Walking the narrow streets of the town at night.

You feel as if you are in dreamland when you walk the narrow streets of the small town and around the castle at night.

A natural swimming pool. Une piscine naturelle

Would you like to have this little cove only for yourself? You can only access it from the sea. And you can be alone there. Only you, the sea and the sun. And whoever you can choose yourself to be with you.

The secrets of the rock.(V) Τα μυστικά του βράχου.(V) Les secrets de la roche.(V)

Another secret the rock is hiding, are these unique tiny flowers. They grow on  that rock and they are picked by the locals once a year. They are being called "sempre viva", meaning in Latin and Italian, "Living for Ever". They are not easy to be picked, because it is not easy to climb on that rock and collect them. And every May, there is a great competition between the locals who is going to climb the rock first and collect the most. Sometimes there are fights between them. But once they have collected them, they can sell them at the local shops for a really good price and make good money but it is only money that can be made only one day per year. At the shops, they are being sold to the tourists as little bouquets, or crosses or any other shape. The photograph before the last in this post, is from a bouquet which was given to us, some ten years back. As you can see, it looks like it has been picked yesterday.

The secrets of the rock.(IV) Τα μυστικά του βράχου.(IV) Les secrets de la roche.(IV)

We were given goggles for underwater viewing by the captain/guide, and jumped off the boat. We were split into groups and followed him to visit the various compartments of the cave. The cave is some 200 meters deep and could go about half way, where the natural light could penetrate. What we could see above and bellow water was like magic. The variety of colors and the effects of the sun. Sometimes, we had to scratch our bellies on the rock to visit another part, or lower our heads no to hit them on the roof of the tunnel we were  going through. At some point, a little higher than the surface of the sea, there was a fresh water lake. A small one actually and on its surface i saw the most amazing reflections I have ever seen. At first i thought it was a hollow at the bottom of the cave, but it was its roof reflected on the calm surface. There i regretted i could not carry the camera with me. All the photographs taken inside the cave, were taken using the natural light of the sun, as it was coming from its entrance. And they were all taken while i was on deck.

The secrets of the rock.(III) Τα μυστικά του βράχου.(III) Les secrets de la roche.(III)

Our Nobel Prize winner poet George Seferis, wrote the the following poem about the sea caves.I will try to translate it for you.
Inside the sea caves.

Inside the sea caves
there is a thirst
there is a love
there is an ecstasy,
everything (is) hard like the seashells
you can hold them
in your palm.

Inside the sea caves

for whole days I was looking at you, in your eyes
and I was not recognizing you neither you were recognizing me.

Later, our world famous composer Mikis Theodorakis, (music for the films Zorba the Greek, Serpico, Z and others) made a song with those verses. You can listen to that song at the bottom of this post.
