The lotuses and the Lotus Eaters.

Last weekend I visited again my friend on Mt Pelion in central Greece. During my stay there the weather was rainy and cold one day and with a bright sunshine the next. I happened to see a couple of lotus trees, bare of leaves but carrying their beautiful sweet and delicious fruit which are just ripening at this time of year. It looks like it is not just me who likes the juicy fruit. There were many different birds visiting the trees at all times, tasting and feasting on them.
And I remembered that part from Homer's Odyssey, which we were taught at school. Ulysses, during his ten year adventurous return trip to Ithaca, visited the land of the Lotus Eaters. He and his crew landed on an unknown place. He send his men to bring water back to the ships, but they failed to come back. Then he searched for them inland, and he found them in a state of amnesia. They had forgotten who they were and why they were sent there. They had tasted those sweet fruit which the locals had offered them, and Ulysses had to use force to bring them back to the ships. They say that whoever tasted it, would forget everything and never want to leave that place again.
That myth, also made me think that i would like the idea of forgetting, even for a short period of time, how we have made our world today. It would be nice to forget and not see what is happening and how things are in our cruel world. It would be a welcomed short change.

A beautiful and sad post for the day, Costas! I love your photos as always and the lotus are so lovely! I tend to feel the same way you do about wanting to escape/forget about the world we live in today. And everyday there seems to be more one wants to escape from.

Bless you and your country Costas...bless us all, for the world is changing and much in the wrong direction. We must keep our focus and try and remain as normal as posisble in all situations. Thankful that we have nature and our cameras...a gift...yes. What common fruit found in the USA, I wonder would the fruits of the Lotus taste most like. My favorite image is of the one dripping wet from the rains that fell. Take care~

There are things, my friends, which make us sad every day. They are getting worse everyday. Everywhere. You dare not listen to the news, to hear what is happening.
You may seek refuge and calmness in nature, see some beautiful thing and you cannot enjoy it.
Because, you know that next moment, next hour, next day, you will have to face the reality of our cruel and inhuman world again.

I've never seen lotus fruits before and, rather stupidly, had always thought lotuses are a form of water lily. (Don't know why!) Can see why they are tempting.

@Λύχνος.

I sure do wish I could pick one off that tree, Costas. I've been cutting up a persimmon for myself nearly every afternoon since they have them in our local store. I'm sure yours are MUCH better! xo
