Do you like zucchini..? Σας αρέσουν τα κολοκύθια..;

I can not say i m really crazy about them. But their flowers is a different matter. Collected early in the morning as they open towards the sun, they are very beautiful. And in Crete, they are a special delicacy. Either stuffed with rice and spices and cooked in the oven or done with eggs as an omelette they are really delicious. The flowers are of two kinds. The same plant is carrying both male and female flowers. Their inside organs are a little different. Above, you can see a close up of the inner details of the male flower. The second photograph is showing the details from the female, and at the third you can see a bee, carrying in her back the polio from the male to the female flower. Of course only the female flowers can produce zuccini after they have been fertilized. The male flowers, open two or three mornings to the sun, then they disappear.

I rather like zucchini grilled but have yet to try the blossoms. THey sell them here at the markets and some batter and fry them. I'd like the ones stuffed with rice and spices I think.

Gorgeous macro shots again Costas. I have never noticed the male/female difference that your photographs illustrate so well. The bee shot...parfait!

Να!

We've grown squash. The annoying thing about their flowers is that they don't always open at the same time, which can make fertilisation erratic.

Beautiful though.

Costas, I adore this veggie very much! The blossoms here, we make a light almost tempura type of batter and dredge them lightly through it and then lightly brown them in Extra Virgin Olive Oil, such a delciate flavor, so yummy~
