The bridge over river Aoos in Greece.

A beautiful stone bridge over the river Aoos, near the town of Konitsa in north-western Greece. It was built near the northern end of the mountain range of Pindos, at an altitude of 450 meters. It is a bridge with only one arc, 35 meters wide and 20 meters high.  local masons built it, it was completed in 1870 and it is till used although a new bridge was built a little further down the river to service cars and vehicles.
Here I must tell you a few things about the people who built this and other similar bridges in the area and further away from here.
They were all coming from a group of villages on the mountains not far away from here. Those villages are still collectively known as "mastorohoria" or the "villages of masons" in greek. Those years, and a couple of ages before then, groups of masons and stone cutters coming from those villages, were gathered by a chief mason, and were traveling all around the south-western Europe, -occupied by the Turks in those years-, and were building bridges, roads, churches and public and private buildings around.
They were leaving early spring, carrying with them only the tools of their profession, and were returning back to their villages  to rest for a few months and be with their families in early winter.
They were very secretive people. They were guarding the secrets of their profession with great zeal. They had even devised a language which were using between themselves in the presence of outsiders.
Each group had a military like structure and organization. There was the chief mason/contractor who was choosing the rest of experts and novices, according to his needs, from the rest people in the village. They had ranks according to one's experience and specialty.
As I told you, they were guarding the secrets of their profession with great zeal. Their profession was their only property and they had to keep it between them, as the villages on the mountains could not produce much else. If someone became known to have leaked a secret,  then he was becoming an outcast. Something like being excommunicated by the church. He would never find a job again, his family would suffer and no one would talk to him. The idiomatic language they were using in those years is still used between them.
If you would like to see more photographs of beautiful old stone bridges from the same area, you can click here.

Very interesting post and informaion.
This bridge is unvelievable and height is quite giddy! It's similar to Mostar bridge and it's a architectural masterpiece!
Have a nice day!
