Great photos with a story!
What "tells" the little arrow on the big, dead tree?
Thank you Anjoe..
I will try to explain about the dead tree and the arrow as good as I can. I have to tell you a little bit of history first.
Arkadi Monastery is very very old, originally built in the 1500s. In 1866, while Crete was occupied by the Turks, one of the many revolutions of the Cretans broke out again. The Turks, brought more army to the island to suppress the revolution. The Monastery was a stronghold of the Cretans as it was built like a fortress and some of rebels, along with many non-combatants, mostly old men, women and children took refuge in there with the monks to avoid the slaughter. A strong force of the Turkish tactical army besieged the place and when they finally broke into it, all those inside gathered in the cellars where large quantities of ammunition and gun powder were stored. Someone put fire in the gunpowder and the place was blown up in the air with all of them inside. They preferred to do that, than falling in the hands of the Turks.
(More of the history of the place at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arkadi_Monastery)
I suspect the tree is perhaps a remainder of those days.. When i took the photo, i did not check whats written on the arrow. Now i checked the original pic again.. and it looks like it is pointing at a hole. It might be a hole made by shrapnel perhaps.
You can see more pics of the place if you look the list of posts here (Arkadi Monastery 1 and 2. I also have a few more pics i took which i did not put in the blog. If you are interested i can send them to you.
Thank you for your interest.
Costas.
