Partridges. Πέρδικες.

They were a common sight all around mainland Greece and the islands a few years back. Now they become almost extinct. The partridges are one of the favorites of hunters where they are allowed to be shot.  These I saw and shot near the temple of Poseidon, at Sounion, Greece, where they are protected. When you visit the temple,  you may see them walking around you, or if you are lucky, you may see a mother hen with ten to fifteen young chicks following her.
Κάποτε ήταν ένα είδος που αφθονούσε στην Ελλάδα. Σήμερα κοντεύει να εξαφανιστεί, επειδή είναι απο τα αγαπημένα θηράματα των κυνηγών. Αυτές τις συνάντησα γύρω από τον ναό του Ποσειδώνα στο Σούνιο, όπου προστατεύονται. Όταν ανεβεί κανείς στον ναό, μπορεί να τις δεί να περπατούν κοντά του, ή ακόμη αν είναι τυχερός, να δεί μια κλώσσα να σέρνει δέκα με δεκαπέντε μικρά πίσω της.

  8. Hello Costas, these are beautiful birds and the header photo showed their wonderful colors. Sorry to hear about the hunt, but glad the ones you showed were protected. One day we hope to see some of magnificent temples in your posts.

  9. Look like what we call quail. Birds like this do stay within a particular area. You were stealthy to catch these.
