Deserted Village. Ερημωμένο χωριό.

Among the many beautiful villages on the mountain range of Pindos there are also a few deserted and abandoned for some time. In These villages nature is claiming back what  once belonged to it.

Ανάμεσα στα όμορφα χωριά της Πίνδου, υπάρχουν και μερικά παρατημένα και ερειπωμένα. Σ' αυτά η φύση διεκδικεί σιγά σιγά ότι κάποτε της ανήκε.

  1. Costas, your photos are marvelous! Sad to see the abandoned village, but even the crumbling houses and buildings have a beauty of their own as nature reclaims the area. Hope you have a wonderful day! Thanks as always for your visit/comment!

  2. These are some intriguing photos! Is the population getting smaller? Are people moving to the cities? Were people driven from their homes for some reason? The ruins are very romantic until they disappear completely, which would be sad. Your photo essay is really beautiful.

  5. these are beautiful! abandoned villages are amazing to see. Some of the villages remind of my in-laws place in the mountains of Portugal. I just finished a wonderful book called Travelling with Pomegranites, written by Sue Monk Kid and her daughter about their travels. Greece is part of the focus, and I loved it and need to see Greece for myself now! Thanks for sharing these - I love seeing this side of Greece.

  6. Your photos are so beautiful Costas and so is your country too. You've captured so artistically even these ruins.
We also have such soil erosion especially caused by cutting down huge forest areas.
    Have a nice week!

  7. Thank you all my friends for your kind comments..
It is always sad to see a village in ruins and abandoned.. Especially when the surroundings are so beautiful. On this particular village only the church and a couple of houses were in acceptable shape. It was around noon on Good Friday when i visited, and the only person I found was an old priest chanting the hymns of the day and trying to add wood to the wooden stove to warm up the cold church, hoping someone would show up for the day.
I did not stay long to see if anyone else showed up. Its really a sad story.
@Leel. Thank you for your visit and your kind comments. I will look up the book you recommended.

The Ravages of Time-- bittersweet --

There is beauty even in decay - the bells ring out across the field for once what stood -- the only voice there is whispering in the wind is the song that all life sings -- praise to God for What is.
